Programs: Our half-day Preschool and Jr. Kindergarten programs are designed to develop the young child’s awareness of stories, words, rhymes, letters, listening and beginning handwriting skills, as well as confidence, independence and inquisitiveness about learning. Our full-day kindergarten program strives to develop each child into a reader and writer, confident in these skills, as well as beginning math, social studies, and science concepts. Our first grade program continues the development of these academic skills in a small class setting, supported by the STAR reading assessment and Accelerated Reading programs. Kindergarten students are evaluated using the PALS screening in the fall, winter and spring. Our first grade students are also assessed using the PALS protocol, and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, which is administered in the spring.
Our curriculum is aligned with the Virginia Foundation Blocks for Early Learning and the Virginia Standards of Learning and designed to not only meet these standards, but also to exceed them
Specialty Classes: Our Preschool and Jr. Kindergarten students participate in a weekly music class, presented by our music teacher, a weekly Spanish class, taught by our Spanish language teacher, and a creative movement class, called Rizumu, led by a qualified and experienced Rizumu instructor. Besides these classes, our Jr. Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Grade students participate in a weekly computer class, conducted by our technology teacher in our computer lab.
Extended Care Program: Our Extended Care Program is designed to meet the before and after school needs of our students, as well as students from Ashland, McAuliffe, and Rosa Parks elementary schools. Active and quiet activities are planned to match the morning and afternoon demeanor of our students. Outdoor play and a supervised homework time are integral parts of the program. Fabulous Fridays are planned to celebrate the end of the week with a special twist. A nutritious breakfast and afternoon snack are served
Facilities: Our campus is located on 21/2 wooded acres that are enclosed by privacy and chain link fencing. The buildings are secured by a number generated access code. Our preschool building houses our school office, kitchen and dining area and classrooms for our youngest students. Our primary building houses our junior kindergarten, kindergarten, first grade and extended care classrooms. Teacher resource rooms and the computer lab are also located here. Both buildings are surrounded by the great outdoors and a selection of age-appropriate play areas and playground equipment.
